Beyond Jollof Episode 4 is here and we’re in Egypt🇪🇬 (well, at least our taste buds are 😉).

I stopped by @tuts.to to try Koshary, Egypt’s national dish for the very first time.

The dish is a whole mix of lentils, rice, pasta, chickpeas, tomato sauce, and crispy onions (yes, all in one bowl 😮). It’s savory, it’s flavorful, and honestly, it had me almost scraping the plate.

What I love most about the Beyond Jollof Series is how I get to have this unique food experiences here in Canada, it’s a gateway for all Africans in the diaspora to see how food like this tells a story, bringing cultures together through something as simple as a meal.

I just travelled to South Africa… without needing a ticket 👀✈️

All it took was food. One minute I’m in Canada, next minute I’m biting into the goodness of two South African staples 🇿🇦💃🏾

For Episode 2 of Beyond Jollof, I visited @hartlandmarket Store here in Canada, where I tried these two for the first time:

🥟 Mince Jaffet – a very unique pastry, shaped and tasting just like our Nigerian meat pie, this instantly reminded me of home.

🥧 Pepper steak pie – this one looks like an apple pie, tastes like a richer meat pie but with juicy meat chunks that had me saying divine!

It’s amazing how food can transport you to another country in just a few bites, and the length I go to find these delicious meals because trust me I drove for hours to get here.

Rice, beans, chicken, duka, and wait for it — pasta?! I didn’t expect that combo but baby, it worked.

I find that rice and beans meals are quintessential in many countries.

A debate recently sparked on social media between Nigerians and Ghanians, about which country, “Waakye” another rice and beans dish, originated from and it’s been enlightening following the interesting conversations. Maybe another food wars is looming between both countries... 😊

This is why I love food: it tells stories, holds memories, and surprises you in the best ways.

When I publicly pitched to take the stage at SAY IT LIKE YOU RECLAIMED IT as I knew it was finally time to STOP HIDING!

My biggest struggles with showing up on this space to express my creative side have stemmed from the stereotypical expectation to conduct myself in a certain way because I’m a lawyer. I would get comments like:

❔“What are you really doing with this law?” and
❔“Why are you all over the place?”

The interesting part is, these comments came from friends, close acquaintances, and even family members.

🎤As I took the stage on Saturday to talk about “The Power of Being More”, I knew it was time to ditch the act and bare my heart out and release myself from the pressure to conform.

Nothing about the way my mind works has ever been conformist, anyway.

And I couldn’t have asked for a better stage, better audience, and better speaker line-up to do this with than @iamjamgamble incredible community!

Collectively, we solidified a stance and channeled the fullness of our power into every area of our lives we tend to shrink to be accepted. Because no matter who it is that’s stifling our voices and preventing us from showingup as our whole selves, we’re unafraid to tell them to SHUT THE HELL UP!

When I publicly pitched to take the stage at SAY IT LIKE YOU RECLAIMED IT as I knew it was finally time to STOP HIDING!
